I was the first person to go to university from my family.

I took speech training. I took a few voice lessons in college.

I get to study and I got to mimic and what I basically did was I stole from every person that I could steal from. I was an imitator. That's what I was. It was years before I could take all of these things that I loved about all of these different artists and put them together and find my voice.

I've always maintained that I see myself as a student. There's always something to learn and be challenged by and hopefully grow from.

When I got back from London, I started with a new voice teacher in the experimental wing, who trained me to have my own artistry as opposed to forcing a technique upon me.

I went to quite an academic school, and all my friends were going to university, but even before my acting jobs, I didn't want to do that. I didn't want to spend another three years being institutionalised, and I feel that getting out of that system benefited me in quite a few ways.

My father was the child of academics and was probably destined to become an academic himself but vetoed that idea. Bailed, dropped out of graduate school and just went to work for an insurance company. But the house was full of books and music and all of that.

As far as I could tell, I was the first person anywhere in my family tree to go to university.

I became an academic so that I could share my knowledge and experience with students.

I've studied voice from a few different people for years.
