Artists don't always know. Almost every song I ever recorded that was a hit at the majors that the promotional people picked I didn't think it would be a hit. I was wrong every time!

Probably some of the songs I never even really listened to the lyrics. Half of them I'd hear off the radio and was probably singing the wrong words and didn't even know it.

I know my lyrics might be weird to some, but they're not like that to me because I know where they come from - I know the secret.

I don't like to get too specific about lyrics. It places limitations on them, and spoils the listeners' interpretation.

I remember starting out and covering songs.

I don't like lyrics that are just thrown together, that were obviously written as you went along, or the song was already written and the guy made up the lyrics in five minutes.

Five or six songs leaked from the original version of 'Encore.' So I had to go in and make new songs to replace them.

There are some songs where I'll have had the music for 20 years and then finally the lyric will come through. That's not common but it does happen. Then there are other songs that come really quickly.

It's such a rush doing a concert and seeing people actually mouthing the lyrics.
