I start listening to something, or I'm seeing somebody a lot or seeing their art. And then I just really want to make a picture of them.

I like to make pictures about people who make a difference.

People see my photos and think I labor over my image and I'm this cool, brooding artist. But I'm just having fun with it.

Whoever wants to know something about me - as an artist which alone is significant - they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognise what I am and what I want.

The whole idea is whatever you do, have fun with it; try to make sure that it's quality and something you don't mind putting your name on.

I don't do the whole, 'Put my name on it, make me famous' thing.

My idea of a good picture is one that's in focus and of a famous person.

I like to talk to people and, obviously, to photograph them.

That's my ambition: that you look at the pictures and realize what complex, fascinating, interesting people every single one of my subjects is.

You always want to come back with an image that's interesting visually, and you hope to get something from the person you photograph that's different than other images you know of these people.
