I wanted to make Canadian films, and I ended up making American films.

I stuck around in Hollywood for too long. I was there a long time, and when I left, I was smart enough to realise that what I was leaving was not just the movie business. I wanted to get rid of the whole atmosphere.

I spent a couple of years doing American films. I did a few.

Later on they send me to Hollywood. To make movies. It was all new to me. I was only 21 years old.

I grew up right near Hollywood, and I wanted to be a filmmaker.

So I got caught up in the same wave as everybody else and went right out to Hollywood, to make movies.

I must say, to my great surprise and pleasure, I deeply loved making movies in the United States because of all the opportunities it gave me to work with people that I admire as artists.
