I connect with all of the characters in my films. That's what makes you want to make a film, that you can enter the mindset, the situation, the conflict, the contradictions.

You can say to actors that you've got to be the character and really get into it, but you have to make it realistic by bringing an element of yourself into it.

You need supporting actors to help to tell the story. For me, I'm lucky to be a part of the films. Being an actor, I'll take any role, whether it's supporting or leading.

You have to want to be in the company of those you're making films about.

I do a film because I like the story and I want to give life to a character - I don't necessarily have to agree with the director.

I need to react to a script, to feel strongly about it in some way. And I need it to be a complex character for sure. And also, I think a lot about what kind of audience there is for the film, what they're looking for and ways to connect with them in the playing of a character.

Before the film begins shooting, in your head, you need to be the character. You have to convince yourself somehow.

A film engages you emotionally and intellectually.
