To be frank, I suspect that today there is little respect for Christianity as source of moral teaching about goodness.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
Mere heathen morality, and not Jesus Christ, is preached in most of our churches.
Christianity is entitled to the tribute of respect. I do not of course mean that all individuals, nominally Christian, deserve trust, confidence, or even respect, for the contrary is too often the case. Too often, men hold religion as they do property - in their wives' names.
Religion may have become a codification of morality, and it may fortify it, but it's not the origin of it.
Respect for the truth comes close to being the basis for all morality.
What we call 'morals' is simply blind obedience to words of command.
In the New Testament, religion is grace and ethics is gratitude.
Christians are not in bondage to do things as the world does, and moreover, the traditions and rudiments of men are not necessary to honor God.
The great rule of moral conduct is next to God, respect time.
I do not want to suggest that you have to be religious to be moral.
I say quite deliberately that the Christian religion, as organized in its Churches, has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world.
