I kind of go in waves with reading. Sometimes I read all the time, and sometimes I can't get settled enough to focus.

Reading is a technology for perspective-taking. When someone else's thoughts are in your head, you are observing the world from that person's vantage point.

I read things and imagine them and then kind of start trying to kind of take what I imagine and make it visual for everybody else to see. It just happens to be my personal vision, and every person's is going to be different, every book reader.

It usually helps me write by reading - somehow the reading gear in your head turns the writing gear.

I write my books in my head, and not in a specific study with a view. The view is from my inner eyes.

I think if you look at exactly where you are, you can't really focus without looking back and forward at the same time.

I try to avoid looking forward or backward, and try to keep looking upward.

I used to have 20/20 vision, believe it or not; that's gone because of all the reading I did when I wasn't supposed to, reading in the back of a car, waiting for each street light to go past so I could grab another sentence.

Of course, you always think about how it will be read. I always aim for a reading in one sitting.
