We must stop the trend of closing schools and building prisons.

It's simple: put the money into schools and not prisons.

Just about every year, Congress passes another crime bill - spending billions of dollars to build more prisons, to place more band-aids on society's scars.

Everybody does good things, but I'm talking about making major changes in the educational system that would impact an entire race. I'm talking about stopping these young gang members from killing one another. I'm talking about keeping prisons from overflowing.

Let us reform our schools, and we shall find little reform needed in our prisons.

We've got to look to our educational programs and focus on doing what we can to stem violence in the schools.

The last thing that should happen is funding cut for education; it should be increased. We need to put more money towards education, and anything else is abusive.

Unfortunately, the elimination of incentives such as parole, good time credits and funding for college courses, means that fewer inmates participate in and excel in literacy, education, treatment and other development programs.

No funding for alternative sentencing instead of more prisons.
