I pretty much just focus on making the records - unless I'm self-releasing them; then I do my own thing. But at some point, you have to stop worrying about chains of distribution, or it takes out of your time to write.

I just don't think you can make records easily and have them be great. It's a process. You've got to get really lucky all the time, or you've got to work like mad.

People are really set in their ways in how they produce records, and I was at least open enough to where I knew I wanted to do something totally different.

I'm really lucky that my record companies have been patient with me and leave me alone and give me the time to make it right in my mind.

And ultimately the people who produce my records, they know that they're here to serve the purpose of me expressing who I am at this period of time and augmenting that or pulling it forward and I love that process.

I jumped off the wheel of fortune because I wanted to simplify things. Now I've fulfilled my obligations to myself by making my new record. I'd like it to sell millions of copies, but my self - worth is not based on chart positions.

Every record I do is a learning process for how I want to do the next one.

I would like to look back on my body of work and be proud of each record in its own right, but as a whole, I want to continue to grow and move forward.
