Over the years, I've lived in a variety of places, including America, but I was born and raised in the Lake District, in Cumbria. Growing up in that rural, sodden, mountainous county has shaped my brain, perhaps even my temperament.
Place is so important to me. The Midwest is like a ghost in my life. It's present as I look out the window now. I see Texas, but if I close my eyes and look out the same window, I'm back in my hometown in Worthington, Minnesota, and I cherish those values and that diction.
It's all in the mind, you know.
I'm happy in L.A., but I will live wherever my kids are, and I don't really mind where it is.
It's a small city where I have a lot of time to think. The orchestra and I have had a chance to connect very well in this time. I think of all the millions of people in Los Angles. There aren't that many millions of people in all of Sweden.
My childhood is in my brother's house, and I like to visit there and be reminded.
I'm from the South, so while I personally find it impossible to live there, I still have a fondness for it as a geographical region.
