I just write songs whenever I feel like it, whenever they come to me.

I'm still learning a lot as a songwriter. I try to write down and make a note of ideas that I cross paths with on a day-to-day basis, whether it be a conversation or something I hear on the radio, seeing a movie, or just thoughts in my head as I'm walking down the street.

The whole point of music is being able to share your story. I've been songwriting for a long time, usually while on the road, as a way to get my feelings out.

I feel the only way I can survive is to spend a lot of time writing songs. I have to have incredible, killer songs that also are hits, or I just don't have a chance.

For me, songwriting is something I have to do ritually. I don't just wait for inspiration; I try to write a little bit every day.

I write songs about stuff that I can't really get past personally - and then I write a song about it and I feel better.

There's this element of surprise when you're writing songs, like it's something outside of you that you get to be part of. And it's just exciting. And that's why I keep writing - because I like that feeling.

I was always writing music anyway. I just sort of fell into it. Writing for me is a therapeutic process.
