I always try to relate a song to something what is going on, the working man, the times, how life goes.

People haven't always been there for me, but music always has.

Once a song's out there, it's no longer mine. And that's the whole purpose of music: to belong to people.

A lot of times, I don't feel responsible for the songs myself. But that's my job or my place in life: to keep my search and catch the ideas before they pass me by.

When I'm on stage, the songs that we've chosen to play from the back catalog are things that still resonate with me, and matter to me. And the songs that I couldn't be a part of, we don't play anymore.

It's really important to me that the songs not only stand out individually but work as a full body of work, too.

Songs go through cycles for me. And sometimes I lose my passion for some of them.

I never see songs as permanent. I'm always in a state of revising everything.

Anxiety and spiritual searching have been consistent themes with me, and that figures into my worldview. But I tend to make my songs sound like relationship songs.

I watch everybody every night, from sitting down to being on their feet at the end, and I feel a sense of reinvention, of caring, presenting these songs in their purest form.
