My life's far too complicated to be summed up in one song. It would take 20 just to represent one single day.

I aspire to make a record that sounds better 10 listens in than it does after two, and still, at 50 listens, you're picking out things that add a depth and a thoughtfulness to it; there's enough in there that you can still be extracting pieces out of it.

Take '39 Steps'. When I finished writing it, I counted the number of measures in the composition. I always do this because I am interested in the length of a song. So I counted this one a couple of times because 39 is an unusual number of measures for a song.

About one or two songs per record is me doing a little bloodletting.

I could have done a hundred songs, really. It was hard to narrow them down, because I tried to pick songs for the most part that actually did have some effect on me or influenced me in the past.

I don't know if I'd ever sing a whole album because I don't know if I'd want to hear my voice for more than three or four songs.

I can't give you 150 takes. I can't even give you 30 different ways of doing it! I don't have the talent or the range for it.
