Performing is just standing up there and doing something. Performance takes on an edge to it. It has a more dramatic context.

The shortest feedback loop I can think of is doing improvisation in front of an audience.

The performances you have in your head are always much better than the performances on stage.

And at the same time, you are of course a performer, but it's very important that you understand that your role as a performer is to get the best performance from those wonderful colleagues that you have the chance to work with.

Performance-wise, you really need to be down in the trenches; you need to do the hard work, for a lot of reasons: To build yourself as a performer, to get a sense of the audience, to work hard and to wonder, 'Do I really want to do this?'

Music is about the performance.

I tend to a lot of improvisational ranting, and that's fun. For me, stand-up has been, performance-wise, a really good outlet.

What comprises good performance? The ability through singing or playing to make the ear conscious of the true content and affect of a composition.

While I've never 'phoned in' a performance, I think I have given some performances where I could have been a bit braver.

A performance is only as good as the audience you are playing to. A lot of times you feed off of the audience, and we always try to give them all we've got and sometimes you don't get a lot back, but we've never been dead whenever we've performed.
