As a research tool, the internet is invaluable.

What people actually refer to as research nowadays is really just Googling.

Many companies restrict Internet activity so heavily that it makes it difficult for people to do online research. The most obvious example? Checking the Facebook profile of someone you just interviewed.

I have always felt that the Internet was a more important research tool for a writer than an artist.

Because there are now online databases of federally funded research, and these databases are searchable by keyword, sex researchers have to be careful how they title their projects. It's become a simple matter, for those who are so inclined, to find and target researchers whose work they object to on religious grounds.

Research is not an obstacle, something to be frightened of. It can be one of the real joys of writing.

Being able to do research in a real-time way is the way research needs to be done in the future.

Here's the thing: I fell impossibly in love with the Internet from the minute I saw it in action in the early 1990s. From that moment on, I have studied it, analyzed it, reported on it, and, mostly, have not been without it as a part of my daily life since.

I love the Internet, but I think you have to only use it in the ways that are good for you. I think there's so much speculation that happens.

I love doing research. It's like cheating, but with permission.
