In some theoretical way I know that a half-million people hear the show. But in a day-to-day way, there's not much evidence of it.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
Many have been with the show for years, and they have sources in the business, so we do know things, but until it is verified, we don't run with the story.
Ironically, that was quite a bit of the appeal of Rumours. It's equally interesting on a musical level and as a soap opera.
What I've learned is that the audience is constantly rotating. Just because it feels like I've said it, there are millions and millions of people that have still never heard of it.
Little did we know it would be watched by millions of people and break viewing records.
Just about any story we think about doing, whether we've read it in a newspaper, heard it on the radio or come upon it through word of mouth - by the time you get there, every other network, cable station and talk show is already racing to the scene.
I won't lie - I picked up the occasional gossip magazine in the past because I thought that maybe 5 to 10 percent of it was true. Now I think it's zero percent.
I never believe them when they say that because you really have to sort of be aware of what's going on in the news in order to get the jokes on the show.
Let's just say that I don't think our show has very much in common with the book any more.
And I haven't met too many actors along the way that haven't told me how much the show has meant to them. It's one of the reasons they say they are doing what they're doing, today.
I've said this forever - I've always believed the Today show is more than the sum of its parts.
