Most people don't feel empowered to make CAD models. The MakerBot Digitizer solves that problem.
Sentiment: NEGATIVE
It is sad that so many designers don't know how to make. CAD software can make a bad design look palatable! It is sad that four years can be spent on a 3D design course without making anything! People who are great at designing and making have a great advantage.
The point is that I don't design stuff for myself. I'm a toolmaker. I design things that other people want to use.
Modelling wasn't a passion of mine, so that made it get old kind of quickly. I was getting very frustrated.
When we looked out at the world and saw what 3D scanners could do, we wanted to make something that could make really high quality models that you could create on your MakerBot.
Modeling isn't all that tough.
By no means am I trying to change the modeling industry.
One of the criticisms we get is, 'Does the world need more plastic crap?' But you have to look beyond the plastic crap, to the design, to the experience, to the empowering nature of the MakerBot and the community.
We started MakerBot in 2009 and made a conscious decision to educate people with the possibilities they could do with 3D printing and share with people what is possible.
So everyone has that problem, models have that problem, too.
The computer has played a role in destroying creativity with the Photoshop. Everybody thinks they're a designer.
