Every other piece of industrial design is a pot or a dish or something insignificant. But when you have a chair, it's like a sculpture of a person: it's alive. It's big. You can't miss it. It's a 'look at me!' item.

From time to time, I've experimented with sculpture or metal design. It's a good break from just sitting behind the keyboard.

I can walk through a hotel lobby and watch people at the desk and see what they're doing. People don't look at me. They don't even know I'm there.

A chair, it's like a sculpture. It starts as a thought and then becomes an idea, something I might think about for years. When the time is right, I express it on paper, usually as a simple line in space. Finally, it takes shape.

So I was at the Actor's Studio, thinking about this, and I happened to glance over to the other side of the stage and I saw the ugliest chair I have ever seen. And I thought, 'Well, I could kill that chair!'

My designs are meant to attract the hand as well as the eye.

And I usually use myself as a model, posing in front of a mirror as I dab the strokes on the canvas.

It's what you don't see that keeps you on the edge of your seat in any kind of film - leave it to the imagination of the viewer.

People buy a chair, and they don't really care who designed it.
